24 April 2016 – Joan Cook and “Where is God in all this?”

Joan Cook led us through a service inspired by recent events at St. Mark’s Unitarian Church in Edinburgh, with the title being a response by members of the congregation after spending several hours trying to fix the damage after heavy rains caused part of the roof to give way! She asked us to consider where we can find God in the midst of chaos.

17 April 2016 – Rob Whiteman and One World

“One World” was the topic of the ‘Stirrings’ magazine produced by trainee ministers for sale at the UK Unitarians Annual Assembly. Rob discussed its meaning, reflecting on Pope Francis’s recent ‘washing of feet’ ceremony, how the Earth appears from space, and reading from President Obama’s hominy for Rev. Clementa Pinkney. We considered how the Universalist tradition in Unitarianism can help us live with and celebrate difference.

10 April 2016 – Rob Whiteman and Salvation and Enlightenment

Rob began by discussing the story of the enlightenment of the Buddha, and discussed the notions of religion as Salvation, as exemplified by somes forms of Christianity, and religion as enlightenment, as seen in Buddhism. Some, such as Thomas Merton, have practised both religions. He also looked at the Jewish tradition, seen in Psalm 139: “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar”.
