29 May 2016 – Rev. Tom McCready and “Celebrating the Surprising Human”

Rev. Tom McCready invited us to consider the meaning of being human, and what salvation means in the modern world. In a service taking in Pope Francis, Refugee Week, C. S. Lewis and Ramsey MacDonald, Rev. McCready gave us his own down-to-earth persepective, ending with the thought: “From me and within me, my salvation shall come”.

In his final service as our student pastor – but definitely not the final service he will ever take for us! – Rob Whiteman discussed some ‘works in progress’, including his thoughts on martyrdom. We considered the example of Martin Luther, who spoke of finding “something so dear to you that you will never give it up”, and the risk of death of the spirit if a person never finds this or stays true to it.

1 May 2016 – Rosemary Arthur and “Did Jesus Ascend?”

1 May 2016 – Rosemary Arthur and “Did Jesus Ascend?”

As we near Ascencion Day in the traditional Christian calendar, Rosemary Arthur considered the idea of Jesus ascending into heaven in the context of the Jewish tradition of prophets such as Elijah and Elisha, Enoch, and others who were seen to ascend directly to heaven instead of awaiting the resurrection and judgement of God. With readings from the Old Testament and “The Bridge is Love”, Rosemary asked us to consider how this tradition was influenced by Greek and Roman ideas of divinity, and how Jesus’ message was that all could follow him.
