John Duncan Donald

We recently received an enquiry about a former lay preacher at the Newcastle Unitarian Church, John Duncan Donald, from one of his descendants. Research by Maurice Large, our former Chairperson, found out the following:

“I have found the record of his marriage in our Register which shows he was married on Jubilee Day, 22 June 1897 (Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee) by Rev. Frank Walters, who was our Minister immediately before Alfred Hall.   He married Sarah Rosina Carter. His father was Robert Donald.

John Duncan Donald died on 26 July 1914; the funeral was conducted by Rev. Alfred Hall and he was interred at St Andrew’s cemetery Newcastle.  Rev. Alfred Hall records the following information: ‘Formerly Financial Secretary of Northumberland and District Unitarian Association [the forerunner to the Northern Unitarian Association]. Member of Northern Advisory Board and lay preacher, died suddenly in Nursing Home.”

His obituary can be seen here: Newspaper obituary for John Duncan Donald.
