Colin Horsfield Obituary

Colin Horsfield

A former member of our congregation, Colin Horsfield, sadly died on on 25th June 2018.  He had been ill since the latter part of 2016 and continued to deteriorate since then. People may remember Colin and Valerie visiting us from time to time from their home in Scotland, usually with Tessa, the golden retriever, who would sit quietly throughout services.

Hazel Warhurst at the Stockton Unitarian Church comments: “Some of us have known Colin since Unitarian Young People’s League (UYPL) days in the 1960’s. A few of you who took part in the ‘Oldies’ Reunion in Newcastle and Northumberland in 2011 will remember him driving the Minibus on a day out when we came back to Derwent Manor from Kielder Water via Scotland!”

Maurice Large at Newcastle Unitarian Church recollects: “Valerie Horsfield, Colin’s widow, was the daughter of Jim and Jessie Haig.  Jim was at one time the chairman of the congregation and a long-standing member of the management committee, and the whole family were regular supporters and members of the church. Valerie had two brothers, Ken, who occasionally comes along to special services and Lindsay, who moved away many years ago.

“Colin was a member of a lifelong Unitarian family from Stalybridge and had been a member of the IRF (International Religious Fellowship) Oldies for years. He came to Newcastle in 2011 when their annual conference was here, and we joined the river trip on the Saturday evening.  The Oldies took the service on the Sunday partly in German and partly in English.”

David Dawson, who knew Colin at Stalybridge, says: “It may be that that my memory of Colin goes back more than most. We were both brought up attending the Unitarian church in Stalybridge and involved in the local UYPL branch.  In 1962, with Colin age 15 and me 23, we were part of the second UYPL Norway expedition organised by Keith Treacher.”

Our thoughts are with Valerie and their children, Richard, Philip and Emma, and the grandchildren.
